    1. Brief summary
We of the US have gaurunteed them 3 things for them to enjoy:
    1) Their separate existence
    2) Undisturbed possession & full enjoyment of lands
    3) Protection from the US on anybody that enroaches their property
The US allows them to do what they want, continue to have they own, and to get protection from the US in their time of need (which didn't happen, instead it was the US that took over their lands)
    2. Author's Purpose
To keep their promise with the Cherokees, in not demanding more than they said they would demand, to allow the Cherokees to meet their demands, to allow them to have the rights that they should own, and to not allow themselves to invade other's rights (after all, this country was built on rights right?)
    3. Historical Context
The US was expanding during that era, and was trying to find out how to get maximum land from the Indians, and wondering what they should do with the Native Americans.

    hope this helps
